Executive Director

Joseph L. Akins

Joseph L. Akins serves as the Executive Director of Cornerstone Youth Mentoring Program (CYMP), where he fulfills the role of chief executive officer. He provides strategic leadership and oversees operational management to ensure the effective execution of CYMP's mission: empowering boys and young men in the Greater Syracuse area. His responsibilities encompass various key areas:

Leadership and Strategic Planning:

  • Develop and implement CYMP's strategic plan aligned with its mission and goals.
  • Lead staff and volunteers to fulfill the organization's mission through effective programs and strategic partnerships.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive organizational culture that fosters excellence and teamwork.

Fundraising and Financial Management:

  • Direct fundraising strategies, including auctions, award dinners, grants, and donations.
  • Manage the organization's budget to maintain financial stability and transparency.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners to secure ongoing funding.

Program Development and Management:

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality programs, such as mentor-mentee sessions, group sessions, job shadowing, internships, and recreational events.
  • Oversee the implementation of the 10-week curriculum-based project conducted three times a year.
  • Monitor program outcomes and drive continuous improvement through consistent evaluations.

Community Engagement and Partnerships:

  • Establish and maintain robust relationships with local schools, businesses, child welfare systems, law enforcement, and other community-based organizations (CBOs).
  • Represent CYMP at community events and forums, serving as the primary spokesperson.
  • Advocate for the needs and interests of the youth served by CYMP.

Human Resources and Administration:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain a dedicated team of staff and volunteers.
  • Provide ongoing professional development and support to staff members.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

Education and Experience: Joseph brings a background in nonprofit management, social work, education, and business administration, with over 20 years of leadership experience in nonprofit organizations focused on youth mentoring and development.
